Hello and Happy New Year from the Student Committee! We're starting to gear up for the conference and finalizing activities for you all (yaaay!). I'm sure you all are working equally as hard on your conference presentations.

Speaking of the conference... Have any of you submitted abstracts for papers or posters that have to do with archeology or historic preservation in Maryland? Then consider applying for the Council for Maryland Archeology (CfMA) Student Stipend Award Contest! The deadline is February 1st!

This committee functions to observe and consult on Native American activities and issues in Maryland, relevant legislation, and efforts of archeologists to interact with Maryland's Indian groups, State-recognized tribes and Federally-recognized tribes. Of primary interest are Maryland Indian efforts to gain state recognition, repatriation issues, consultation processes, and education issues.

Committee Chair:  Virginia Busby and Tiara Thomas

Committee Members: Zachary Singer, Lynne Bulhack, Kari Sprengeler, Carol Ebright, Katie Boyle, Valerie Hall, Patricia Vazquez, Claude Bowen, Peter Brooks, Tiara Thomas, Kerry Lessard, Rico Newman, Julia King, Virginia Busby

The focus of the Best Practices Committee is to identify changing methods and methodological concerns that are not addressed in the current Standards and Guidelines for Archeological Investigations in Maryland. Most importantly, this committee seeks to propose one or more solutions to addressing the identified changes. Other areas such as curation are not within the purview of the committee. Members should identify best practices from their own experiences or from the experiences of other states to address changing field methods and suggest solutions. The final product is envisioned as a "living" white paper or best practices document that can be used to supplement current practice. The most current form of the White Papers is available HERE.
